Power outage left downtown Portland in the dark

A massive power outage right in the heart of downtown Portland Tuesday night caused lots of problems for thousands of people.

The outage started around 6:30 p.m., and lights started coming back on shortly after 8 p.m.

"The lights flickered twice, lasted about ten seconds and then the third time it just went out for good," Candice Hohenthaner, who was having dinner downtown, said.

PGE says about 1,400 customers were affected.

Businesses, street lamps and traffic lights were all out for several blocks that bordered both sides of the Willamette River.

Police officers had to light flares in major intersections to alert drivers.

Trimet also warned riders of delays for both Max trains and buses.

Firefighters were also busy, saying they received at least three calls of people getting stuck in elevators.

The exact cause of the power outage is still unknown.

PGE said it was somehow related to a substation equipment failure near OMSI.
