Portland PAL Center, 2012
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A partnership between local law enforcement agencies to provide activities and meals to kids is shutting down.
The Greater Portland Police Activities League will close its doors Friday, absent emergency funding, according to the organization.
A release from PAL said the ongoing reduction of government funding coupled with the current economy led to the decision.
The organization returned to the metro area in 1989 and is a partnership between all of the law enforcement agencies in Multnomah County, along with the Beaverton Police Department.
Activities included overseeing Portland youth football, sports camps, fishing and archery events, as well as art programs. The agency provided after-school activities to thousands of local students.
The Gresham PAL Center served breakfast and lunch daily to as many as 100 children.
The closure will include both the Bud Monnes PAL Center in Gresham and the PAL Office at the Portland Police Bureau's North Precinct. The Beaverton PAL Center will remain open for the time being.
PAL is a non-profit organization and donations can still be made at PortlandPAL.org.
