Portland police are continuing to search for a white van involved in a fatal hit-and-run on Southeast Holgate Boulevard on Thursday morning.
Portland police said 56-year-old Tom Gann was hit by the van in the 1400 block of Holgate at about 5:30 a.m.
"Honestly it doesn't seem real, it seems ridiculous. It's just a waste, a total waste, this didn't have to happen. He didn't deserve this," said Georgia Weather, Gann's daughter.
Gann, who lived at an apartment complex in the area, had been crossing diagonally from south to north when he was struck. His family believes he may have been going to get coffee or trying to catch a bus. The driver who hit him never stopped.
Officers arrived and found Gann suffering from "traumatic injuries," and he was rushed to a Portland hospital to be treated. He was later pronounced dead.
"To lose someone is hard enough, to lose someone in this way is the worst," said Weather. "I just want the person that did this to stand up and be a human being, and for this person to understand there are people hurting."
The suspect vehicle is described as a 1992 to 1996 Ford Econoline full-size cargo van, white in color, with roof racks and no side windows. The van should have significant front-end damage to the hood and grill, as well as broken glass. It was last seen heading westbound on Holgate.
Holgate was closed to all traffic from Milwaukie to 17th avenues to allow for a police investigation.
Gann's death is the sixth traffic fatality in Portland this year, and the third involving a pedestrian.
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to call 503-823-2103 and reference case number 13-12552.
