Valentine's Day treats given to animals at the Oregon Zoo

Posted: Updated:

Valentine's Day means it's treat time at the Oregon Zoo.

For the 13th year, zoo workers gave special enrichment treats to the animals. The zoo's enrichment programs aim at mentally and physically engaging the animals by providing them with opportunities to play, forage and perform natural behaviors.

It usually goes on behind the scenes, but Valentine's Day is different. The animals are given special themed treats in front of park visitors.

A group of primates tore up a heart-covered box and found plenty of leafy treats inside.

Some of the colobus and swamp monkeys ate what they could right away, while others took handfuls with them back up into the trees.

Sea lions and otters received red heart-shaped treats and some floating heart pillows to play with. Polar bears got a Valentine's Day message spread on their window with a cream cheese frosting, along with papier mache flowers to inspect.
