PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon is celebrating its 154th birthday Thursday.

Congress voted 114-108 to admit Oregon to the Union on Feb. 12, 1859. President James Buchanan signed the bill into law two days later, according to the Oregon Historical Society, and Oregon became the 33rd state.

The historical society's website has a story about the political battle involving Oregon joining the United States, especially regarding the issue of slavery at the time.

On Thursday, the event was celebrated around the state, including at the historical societies in downtown Portland. The organization had a cake provided by Oregon bakery Baker and Spice, along with special exhibits.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber also marked the event with some cake. His slice came courtesy of the Oregon Wheat Growers League at the capitol in Salem.

The governor sent out a photo of the cake-cutting event on Twitter.
