Sex offender working as girls basketball referee arrested

Posted: Updated:

A registered sex offender who's been a referee for girls basketball games in the Portland area is behind bars.

Fox 12 cameras were rolling Thursday as police arrested Stanley Washington, a sex offender, for failing to register a new home address.

Officers checked up on him after a Portland Police Bureau employee saw him working as a referee for middle school girls basketball games.

Even though Washington is a registered sex offender, his probation has ended so working as a sports referee is not against the law.

However, police said having him around young girls is like bringing an alcoholic to a bar. Plus, failing to register is a felony, according to officers.

Still, Washington said he did nothing wrong and was not put in a position to make parents uncomfortable.

"I was just reffing the games and under my understanding, I can ref anybody at this time because I've been through the system and I'm off paper," Washington told Fox 12.

In the early 1990s, Washington pleaded guilty to rape involving a girl younger than 14.

"Most of the people who treat the offenders tell them they need to stay away from whatever it is that's the abhorrent sexual desire," said Officer Bridget Sickon.

Sickon said after Thursday's arrest, she's confident his next parole restrictions will prevent him from continuing to work as a referee around young girls.

Still, police added, Washington is not classified as a predatory sex offender and could possibly be allowed to ref again in a few years when his next set of parole guidelines expires.
