Rape suspect sentenced to prison

NEWPORT, OR (KPTV) -

The man who brutally attacked and raped a Newport woman will spend several years in the Oregon state prison.

A jury convicted Thomas Acosta in early February on sex abuse and assault charges.  A judge sentenced Acosta to eight years and four months in prison on Thursday.

Police arrested Acosta in October of last year after he brutally attacked and raped his then girlfriend, April Loper, outside the Oregon Coast Aquarium, officers said.

The case was almost thrown out of court when Loper died in a car crash several weeks after Acosta's arrest.

Loper's family released balloons outside the courthouse Thursday to honor her memory.
