A Vancouver man is recovering from stab wounds after confronting a prowler in his backyard Tuesday afternoon.
Dave McCracken said he heard a noise and went to investigate.
"I walked out my back door and saw him trying to go into my shed and I walked up and tapped him on the shoulder, and when he turned around I realized I didn't know who he was, I just started hitting him," McCracken said.
He said the suspect then reached into his pocket and pulled out a knife.
"I tried to stay away from him," said McCracken. "I slipped on the mud and I fell and was on my back and he stood on my leg and my chest and started trying to stab me."
McCracken said he blocked the blows to his face but the suspect succeeded elsewhere.
"He stabbed me in my belly right all the way through my muscles," said McCracken. "My leg hurts, everything hurts and he got me in the hip, too."
Just a little deeper and McCracken said the knife would have punctured his intestines. Still, he said he doesn't regret his decision to confront the man.
"I've got to protect my family," said McCracken. "He's lucky I didn't have a gun."
The prowler didn't steal anything before he ran away and it's unclear what he was after. Police are still looking for clues.
McCracken said he didn't know the man.
Anyone with information should contact Vancouver police.
