PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland is one of 35 U.S. cities in the running to potentially host the 2024 Olympic Games.

The U.S. Olympic Committee sent letters to mayors of possible Olympic hosts on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The USOC says they have a little more then two years to decide whether they want to submit a bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

They say the staging of the games is an extraordinary undertaking, with operating budgets in excess of $3 billion, not including costs associated with venue construction and other infrastructure.

Cities considered must be able to provide 45,000 hotel rooms, an Olympic Village that sleeps 16,500 and a 5000-person dining hall.

Potential sites must free up operations space for more than 15,000 media and broadcasters and an international airport that can handle thousands of international travelers per day.

So far, the mayor's office hasn't responded to the proposal.
