Parking price going up near JELD-WEN Field for Timbers matches

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Parking near Jeld-Wen Field on event days is about to get more expensive.

The city of Portland Bureau of Transportation announced the plan on Tuesday.

The event parking rate will go up to $3.50 from the usual $1.60 on March 1.

That price hike can last up to four hours and goes into effect 90 minutes before the start of an event.

Portland is also expanding the area of town that price applies to.

The new event boundaries will be the south side of West Burnside to Southwest Jefferson and from Southwest 18th Avenue to Southwest 12th.

The transportation bureau says the expansion is needed because that area gets filled to capacity during big events at Jeld-Wen.

"We now manage an additional 182 on-street parking spaces for a total of 631 spaces available during authorized events at Jeld-Wen Field" said City Traffic Engineer Robert Burchfield. "This enables us to provide event goers more access while lessening the impact on adjacent neighborhoods."

City crews plan to start installing new signs at the end of February and hope to finish before the Timbers Major League Soccer season kicks off March 3.
