Bald eagle hit on I-84 euthanized

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A bald eagle struck by a car on Interstate 84 on Wednesday has been euthanized by the Audubon Society of Portland.

Deb Sheaffer, a veterinarian for the Audubon Society, said a lot of factors went into the decision, "but it ultimately comes down to quality of life."

"The eagle simply couldn't have survived in the wild or in captivity, so it was time to end his suffering," she said.

Portland firefighters were flagged down by a driver on I-84 at 102nd Avenue about 12:30 p.m. The eagle was feeding on something on the side of the freeway when it was hit.

The eagle was in critical condition, and an early exam revealed paralysis of both legs and a probable break in the bird's left leg. An X-ray confirmed the break and suggested vertebral trauma.

Sheaffer said the eagle was taken for a CT scan, which revealed a fractured vertebra and a blood clot that was pushing on the bird's spinal cord.

"The scan results made it clear that the most humane course - the only course, really - was to euthanize the eagle," Sheaffer said.
