An investigation into a shootout at a Silverton RV park continued Tuesday morning after the death of a man who police said opened fire and wounded one person and then later shot at deputies.
Witnesses said the man, who had two handguns and a rifle, started firing at anyone who stood in his way.
Marion County sheriff's deputies said they received 911 calls about 2 p.m. Monday. The callers said a man was walking through Silver Spur RV Park on Silverton Road NE and shooting at people.
Witnesses told FOX 12 a park employee was shot. He is in stable condition at a Portland hospital. Reports of a woman also being hit in the gunfire turned out to be false.
When deputies arrived, they found the gunman perched behind a picnic table and he fired his rifle at them, authorities said.
"I saw the guy reloading. When he got to the point where he tipped
over the picnic table and I'm looking at him, it was time to go," said
witness Rick Norword. "(I) grabbed my pistol, grabbed my wife, got into
the car and ran."
During the gunfire, investigators said the man was hit by at least one round, and he later died at a hospital.
"Any type of situation, with an RV park spread out acres, is obviously a challenge. Our folks did an amazing job," said Marion County Sheriff Jason Myers.
In the aftermath of the shooting, FOX 12's helicopter showed police tape blocking off a large portion of the RV park. A handgun could also be seen on the picnic table, and there was at least one other gun on the ground.
Investigators haven't released the gunman's name or a motive for the shooting, but witnesses said the man used to live at the RV park and was kicked out last week.
The names of the shooting victim and the deputies involved in the shooting have also not been released.
Keizer police are the lead agency investigating the deputy-involved shooting.
Silverton Road at Brush Creek was blocked to allow for a police investigation. Paradise Alley between Silverton and Cascade Highway was also blocked off.
