Fritz, demonstrators want paid sick time for all

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Commissioner Amanda Fritz was among the demonstrators gathered outside City Hall on Monday in support of a proposed law to make paid sick time mandatory for all employees.

The law would require employers to give workers up to 40 hours of sick leave every year.

Supporters say under current laws, workers often have to choose between taking time off to recover from illness and keeping their jobs.

"Nobody benefits in our community when we have service workers ... coughing on our hamburgers and handling our food," said Steve Hughes, of Oregon Working Families.

Hughes also said the new law would increase productivity in the workplace by lessening the potential for workers to spread illness to other employees.

The bill is being considered in the 2013 Oregon House of Representatives legislative session.
