Two Portland schools to consolidate

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Ockley Green PK-8 School will merge with Chief Joseph Elementary School in North Portland.

The Portland Public Schools board made that decision Monday night. The vote was unanimous and came after months of meetings on the subject.

The schools together now become one neighborhood k-8 school operating on two campuses. They will eventually be combined into one campus.

Board members said this consolidation was necessary to both bolster school programs and to provide stability to the Jefferson cluster neighborhood schools.

Enrollment in schools in north and northeast Portland is uneven according to the district. Ockley Green is the smallest k-8 school in the district, while Chief Joseph Elementary is growing.

Parents in the Jefferson cluster previously rallied against these changes saying they unfairly affect low-income students and students of color.
