Clackamas County leaders will not pursue a ballot measure regarding a toll on Interstate 205.
On Feb. 21, county commissioners asked staff to prepare a ballot measure exploring the possibility of charging a toll on the highway in Clackamas County for a May 21 special election.
Commissioners expressed concern about the potential increased traffic in Clackamas County if there is a toll as part of the Columbia River Crossing project to replace the Interstate 5 Bridge between Oregon and Washington.
In December 2012, the Oregon Transportation Commission approved a tolling agreement with the Washington State Transportation Commission for the CRC project.
A PEMCO Insurance poll released in late 2012 found that a majority of drivers who use I-5 to cross the border would use I-205 instead if a toll was implemented on the new bridge.
Instead of pursuing a ballot measure, Clackamas County commissioners decided Tuesday to draft a letter repeating concerns about the potential for traffic congestion on I-205 if a toll is implemented on a new I-5 bridge in the future.
