OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

A mechanical failure in a car is being blamed for a garage fire that caused $37,000 worth of damage.

The fire started at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday on South Highway 213 near Leland Road, south of Oregon City. Firefighters managed to knock it down and keep it from spreading to the home.

Firefighters said the detached garage was just 10 feet away from the house. The fire created flame lengths upward of 25 feet and sent thick black smoke pouring into the air.

Two people inside and their dog made it out safely.

The garage and two cars inside were destroyed. The home suffered only minor exterior damage.

Investigators said one of the cars in the garage experienced a mechanical failure that led to the fire.
