Canadian midfielder Will Johnson has been named captain of the Portland Timbers ahead of the team's season opener against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.
Johnson takes the captain's armband from Jack Jewsbury, who held the honor during Portland's first two seasons in MLS.
"A huge honor and a massive responsibility," Johnson wrote on Twitter. "We won't back down to anyone and no challenge will be seen as too big. See you Sunday."
The Timbers added Johnson in the offseason via a trade with Real Salt Lake, where he ranked among the team's career leaders in games played. He was a 2009 MLS All-Star and won the MLS Cup in 2009.
Portland kicks off the 2013 MLS season at JELD-WEN Field on Sunday. The opening match has a 4:30 p.m. kickoff time and will be televised on ESPN2.
