BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A woman who crashed her car off Highway 26 and escaped just before it erupted in flames was driving under the influence, according to police.

Evette Washington, 28, of Beaverton was arrested for DUII and reckless driving, along with being cited for driving while suspended.

Investigators said she was driving from Highway 26 westbound to Highway 217 southbound around 2 p.m. Wednesday when the crash happened.

She hit a median on Highway 26, left the road and landed near a MAX tunnel at the Sunset Transit Station in Beaverton.

No one else was in the car.

The burning car created a large plume of black smoke that could be seen for miles. Firefighters quickly put it out.

On-ramps and off-ramps in the area were closed to allow for a police investigation.

Washington was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
