Police believe a woman who was hit and killed on a coastal highway jumped into traffic.
It happened at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 101 north of Arch Cape.
Troopers said a 2013 Dodge Challenger was heading north on the highway near milepost 34 when a woman walking along the northbound shoulder jumped into the traffic lane and was hit by the car.
The woman was declared dead at the scene. The man driving the car was not hurt.
The woman has been identified, but her name has not been released. Investigators said she did not live in the area.
Highway 101 was closed for about 90 minutes before one lane was open to traffic. All lanes were open 30 minutes later.
