Camas firefighter: 'Ronnie! I'm on fire!'

CAMAS, WA (KPTV) -

A Camas-Washougal firefighter had a close call at a burning townhouse in Camas on Thursday morning.

Nearly two dozen firefighters responded to the home on Southeast Weir Street at about 9:30 a.m. Crews found smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the townhouse.

Camas firefighters Gary Horst and Ron Nickles headed straight for the flames coming from a second-story bedroom, but the smoke was thick.

"(We) got the window open, and something fell off the shelf of the window that was flammable," Horst said.

Once the flammable object fell and broke, Horst was instantly "engulfed in flames," Nickles said. Fortunately, Horst was protected by his gear.

"So I'm trying to make my way back to him, to the nozzle, hollering, 'Ronnie, Ronnie, I'm on fire!" Horst said.

A friend's quick thinking also got him safely out of harm's way.

"I had to grab the nozzle and put it on fog and put him out," Nickles said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters said a person living there said he used a lighter to see under his bed because he didn't have a flashlight.
