Detectives: 14-year-old boy behind the wheel during car chase

A police chase in Bend ended with a big crash, a power outage and a surprise suspect behind the wheel.

It started at 12:30 a.m. Thursday when a detective spotted a 1994 GMC Suburban swerving and crossing the double yellow line of Knott Road near Highway 97.

The detective tried to initiate a traffic stop for suspicion of DUII, but the suspect did not stop. Instead, the Suburban accelerated to speeds upward of 80 mph and went into a subdivision.

Additional law enforcement officers were called to the scene.

The Suburban then hit a power pole and came to rest in the front yard of a home. The initial responding detective was unable to follow the vehicle because several power lines fell onto the road.

A homeowner told deputies the driver ran away from the scene. The driver was found a short time later and investigators discovered he is only 14 years old.

The juvenile was taken into custody without further incident. The boy was alone in the vehicle and not hurt in the crash.

Power was knocked out to homes in the area for hours.

The boy was later released to his parents. He is charged with felony attempting to elude, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.

Investigators said alcohol was not a factor.
