PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A group of University of Portland students wants their school to be more inclusive toward gay and lesbian students and staff.
Demonstrators stood on the campus lawn Thursday afternoon and duct taped their mouths shut to symbolize how the school silences its LGBTQ population.
The group says the university operates under a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" mentality when dealing with these issues. They want the school to change its discrimination policy to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
The group has created an online petition that has already gathered more than 1,100 signatures.
The University of Portland says it does not discriminate against any of its students.
