PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Timbers are set to kick off the team's third season in Major League Soccer in front of a national television audience.

The Timbers open the regular season at JELD-WEN Field on Sunday against the New York Red Bulls. The team has a new coach and plenty of new players heading into the 2013 season.

The Timbers will be looking for their first appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs. Portland finished eighth in the Western Conference last season.

The Timbers had a preseason record of 3-2-2, including a 1-1 draw with Sweden's AIK in the final match of the preseason Feb. 23.

The Red Bulls lead the all-time series against the Timbers with a record of 2-0-1. The teams tied 3-3 in their only previous matchup at JELD-WEN Field.

Sunday's game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
