HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

Hillsboro police arrested a man accused in a suspected hate crime that involved a man with a wrench attacking another man walking a pink poodle with his boyfriend.

Officers arrested George Mason, Jr., 22 early Saturday morning in the Target parking lot on Northwest Evergreen.

Investigators said he started 3:30 p.m. Friday at Northwest 185th and Evergreen Parkway near the Petco parking lot.

The victim said he was walking with his boyfriend in the crosswalk when someone pulled up next to them and started yelling homophobic slurs, while also making fun of their dog named Beauty.

David Beltier said the man then got out of his SUV and started punching him in the face. The suspect then went back to his car and emerged with a foot-long metal wrench.

The man hit Beltier in the back of the head with the wrench.

The victim was not cut open or badly hurt, according to police. He did suffer a bump to the back of his head.

The victims said the attacker then got back into his SUV and sped away.

"He was saying your poodle is a weird color and that's just un-American and F-you, you f--- and shouting," said Jeremy Mark, the victim's boyfriend.

"It just really hurts to know people are out there still like that," said Beltier, holding back tears. "Who cares if my dog is pink. It's not their dog. So leave me alone."

"I'm very relieved I'm not hurt," Beltier said. "I could be passed out or close to dead if he hit me hard enough or more.

Police booked Mason into the Washington County jail.

He's facing a number of charges including assault, intimidation and unlawful use of a weapon.
