A woman drove her car across a lawn at Yachats State Park, nearly struck another car with a family of four inside, then drove full-speed off a cliff Saturday afternoon, deputies said.

The car driven by 41-year-old Maya Thomas crashed onto the rocks and surf below the cliff. Thomas suffered serious injuries and paramedics took her to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis to be treated.

Before the crash, Thomas reportedly assaulted her boyfriend and another female at the Underground Pub in Yachats, causing minor injuries to both of them, said a Lincoln County Sheriff's spokesman.

After the alleged assault, Thomas got in her car and drove off, nearly striking several bystanders near the Yachats Post Office, including two firefighters who responded to help.

Thomas drove west on Second Street until entering the state park, where she nearly hit another car and then went off the cliff, deputies said. Photos from onlookers posted to NewsLincolnCounty.com showed the car came to rest in a rocky stretch of the beach.

A tow company was able to remove the car from the rocks.

Thomas was cited on a charge of driving under the influence. Several other criminal charges are pending, according to the sheriff's office.
