HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -
A family escaped a Hillsboro house fire Tuesday and firefighters made sure a pet rabbit got out unharmed, as well.
The fire started at about 4:20 p.m. on Edison Street. Firefighters got the attic fire under control in less than 10 minutes.
Jeremiah Shipman told investigators he smelled smoke in the house and found melting plastic dripping from a bathroom exhaust fan. He called 911 and his wife and their 2-year-old son escaped.
Shipman suffered only very minor burns trying to put out the fire, according to firefighters. No one else was hurt.
Two cats in the home managed to escape, and firefighters rescued a pet rabbit in a cage in the kitchen.
The home had no working smoke detectors, and the family does not have renters insurance. The damage is estimated at $15,000.
