PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Friends and family have said their goodbyes to 5-year-old Morgan Maynard Cook.

A driver struck and killed Morgan  as she walked home from a friend's house last week on Southeast 136th near Ellis in Portland. She was holding someone's hand but let go and quickly darted across the street and was hit by a car.

Morgan's mother, Rhonda Maynard, said she's trying to remember the happy moments with her daughter, while still dealing with the pain of losing a child.

"I never imagined to first to be blessed with a special angel and to have her taken five years later. It's very heartbreaking and very sad," she said.

Cook's death has renewed neighbors' concerns about the lack of sidewalks and crosswalks in the area.

Donations to help the family pay for the funeral can be made to the Morgan Maynard-Cook Fund at the Bank of the West.
