No charges for grandma who took kids for hours

GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A grandmother who set off a frantic search for three missing children earlier this week won't face any criminal charges.

Instead, Gresham police said 58-year-old Barbara Cameron will undergo a mental health evaluation. Officers took her to Portland Adventist Hospital on a mental health hold.

A Gresham police spokesman said officers consulted with the district attorney's office and mental health services after learning the circumstances of the children's all-night event.

Cameron and the three kids left home Sunday afternoon, and then were reported missing by the children's mother at 9:52 p.m.

Police sent out an alert to media, and a man watching FOX 12 saw information about Cameron's car.

Less than two hours later, he saw that same car during the morning commute and called 911. John Stursa followed the car for about 10 minutes until police could stop Cameron.

The children were safe and reunited with their mother.

"I've got kids too. I can only imagine how the parents felt," Stursa said.

The grandmother did not want to talk to investigators.
