PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The family of a teenage girl accused of kidnapping her cousin's baby said the charges are ludicrous.

Kabriana Harper, 17, made her first court appearance Wednesday. She is charged with second-degree kidnapping, which is a Measure 11 crime.

Court documents say Harper took the 4-month-old child and then abandoned him under a tree in a stranger's front yard.

Harper did not enter a plea in court, but her great uncle expressed his frustrations outside the courtroom.

"This is ludicrous man," said Eugene McCullough. "That girl ain't never ever in her life been in trouble. The most bubbliest girl in the world. You all got her locked up."

However, court documents show Harper admitted to police she had taken her cousin's baby.

Investigators said Harper was at her cousin's apartment in southeast Portland. The baby's mother was in the shower and heard the front door close.

When she got out, she realized her son, who was sleeping in his car seat, was gone.

Police said family members began calling Harper to see if she had the baby. The family told officers she denied having him.

That's when police said Harper returned to the apartment without the child.

Five hours later, at about 7 a.m., a stranger found the baby under a tree in her front yard less than a mile away.

Police said the baby was cold and wrapped loosely in a blanket.

Court documents show Harper admitted to police she abandoned the baby when family members started calling her. She said she was worried about the baby, but couldn't explain why she took him.

On Wednesday, a judge ordered the teen to remain in custody until at least her next hearing, scheduled for March 13.
