SALEM, OR (KPTV) -
A measure introduced in the Oregon Senate would make it illegal to smoke while driving if a child is in the car.
Senate Bill 444, if passed into law, would carry an initial maximum fine of $250 for smoking in a car with someone under the age of 18 along for the ride.
The bill applies to cigarettes, cigars or other forms of tobacco.
The bill states a police officer would only be able to enforce it if the car was already stopped and the driver detained for a separate traffic violation or other offense.
A second offense would carry a fine of $500, while a third time would cost $1,000.
