New details shed light on lion attack

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, CA (KPTV) -

A woman who was killed by a lion at a big cat sanctuary near Fresno, CA had a sibling living in the Portland area. Diana Hanson's brother traveled from his home in Hillsboro to his family home near Seattle after hearing the news of his sister's untimely death.

An autopsy performed this week helped shed some light on her death. The report revealed that Hanson died instantly when the 500-pound lion broke her neck with a swipe of the paw.  Investigators believe the 24-year-old intern may have been on the phone with a co-worker and cleaning a cage just before the attack.

While the investigation is not yet complete, investigators theorize that the lion, known as Cous-Cous, may have gotten loose from a smaller cage used to house the animals while the main cages are cleaned.

By the time authorities got to the scene, Hanson was already dead. Fresno County deputies shot and killed the lion.
