A man taken into custody in connection with a body found at a Mesa smoke shop has been booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder.
Chad Stevens, 23, also faces robbery and third-degree burglary charges.
Mesa police spokesman Steve Berry said businesses neighboring 855 W. University heard commotion about 1 p.m. Friday and called police.
As police pulled up to the business, they saw a man, now identified as Stevens, walking away. Witnesses told police that it was the man who came from the shop. Stevens then took off running and police caught up with him at a nearby apartment complex, according to investigators.
Stevens was taken into custody and is being questioned by police.
When officers went into the smoke shop, they found a man dead. He's been identified as Abdou G. Abdou, a 59-year-old owner/operator of the business, police said.
