A person is firing a pellet gun at people in a southeast Portland neighborhood.

At least three people have been hit and one car windshield was damaged.

"I just all of the sudden heard a zip noise and a kind of pop in my back," said one of the victims, Matt, who asked to be identified using only his first name. "I lunged forward and twirled around and saw an apartment complex facing me with a window open upstairs."

Matt, who sells home improvement products, was walking down Southeast 141st Avenue toward Southeast Division Street Thursday, when he was hit.

The pellet lodged in his back, near his shoulder blade, and removal will require surgery.

X-rays show the pellet came within an inch of puncturing his lung, he said.

"I just feel blessed that it didn't hit me in the neck or the head or puncture my lung, or who knows. It could have hit me in the temple and killed me," said Matt. "Been married for about a year, got my whole life ahead of me, so it was just kind of a wake up call."

Matt was not the only target.

Moments later, a pellet bounced off his co-worker's belt, he said.

William Jenkins, who lives in the neighborhood, said a pellet struck his neighbor in the chest.

His neighbor's thick coat protected him from injury.

Another pellet damaged Jenkins' car windshield.

"As an opinion, I think they tried to hit somebody. It was right at his heart, they had to be aiming at his heart," said Jenkins. "I think they were shooting at me too."

Matt also believes he was targeted.

"Oh yeah, they were aiming at me. They hit me in the back," said Matt. "I just feel fortunate they didn't shoot a real gun at me. But it's definitely not funny laughing matter."
