The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office spent all day just east of Crown Point to retrieve a car that was discovered down an embankment.
Officials have since confirmed that 34-year-old Aaron Griffin was found dead inside the vehicle in a deep ravine.
Griffin was a wanted suspect in a December 2012 attack at Shilo Inn on Canyon Road. Deputies said he attacked his estranged wife and her male friend using a pry-bar tool. A Good Samaritan intervened, and Griffin escaped in an SUV stolen from the car dealership where he worked, the sheriff's office said.
On Saturday, MCSO deputies and Corbett firefighters responded to the location and could see Griffin's vehicle at the bottom of a ravine off the highway.
After considering the amount of daylight left at that point and possible access points to the vehicle, it was decided that crews would hold off until Sunday to try to get to it.
Personnel from MCSO, Corbett Fire, Portland Mountain Rescue, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement, ODOT and State Parks all met up late Sunday morning and used ropes to make their way down to the vehicle, where they found Griffin's body inside.
A spokesman with the sheriff's office says it's too early to say whether the death was accidental. However, it does appear that the vehicle has been there for a couple of weeks.
East Historic Columbia River Highway was closed between Latourell Falls and Crown Point as detectives investigated.
