LEBANON, OR (KPTV) -
A man who told police he was robbed by two masked men at the Lebanon Elks Lodge is accused of making the story up and stealing the money himself.
Lebanon police were called out to the club at 633 Park St. on Feb. 18.
Nicholas Layton, 25, said he believed the masked men had a gun when they held him up. Police searched the area, but did not find any suspects.
Detectives later identified Layton as a possible suspect.
He was brought in for questioning Friday and officers said he confessed to fabricating the story about the masked men. Investigators said he hid money at the scene and waited for police to leave and then he took it home with him.
Layton is now charged with theft, initiating a false report and improper use of 911. He is scheduled to appear in Lebanon Municipal Court April 9.
