Portland couple retrofitting home for quake safety

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland couple are having their 100-year-old home retrofitted for earthquake safety by a local company.

Crews from Northwest Seismic are working on the Southeast Portland home this week.

Simply put, workers are making sure the home is securely attached to its foundation.

"We believe that if the house stays on the foundation it will be repairable," said Michael Wieber of Northwest Seismic. "If we can't keep it on the foundation it won't be repairable."

Homeowner Everice Moro said it's a wise investment.

"This is protection for our home, it's our biggest investment," Moro said. "We want it to last and I think it's that stewardship of your home and property, you take care of it."

Northwest Seismic said retrofits start at about $2,000, depending on the size of the home.

Experts say the Portland area could see a large earthquake, similar that devastated Japan in 2011, in the next 50 years.
