Deadline for Submissions Extended to April 15, 2013
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 13, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis today reminded and encouraged all Pennsylvania public, nonpublic and private high school students to participate in the "In Lincoln's Footsteps" speech contest.
"President Lincoln holds a special place in the history of Pennsylvania and this contest is a way for today's students to learn about the significance his contributions have had throughout our nation," Tomalis said. "I encourage all students across the state to participate in this contest to honor the memory of our 16th president."
This year, Nov. 19, 2013, marks the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. As part of this historical celebration, Pennsylvania's high school students and teachers are invited to participate in this statewide speech contest.
The winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, professional speech presentation training and an all-expense paid trip to Gettysburg, for Dedication Day 2013 to deliver the winning speech at the official Dedication Day ceremony.
The winner's school will receive a collection of Gettysburg/Lincoln-related books and a banner recognizing the education entity and its winner.
The contest, in which Governor Tom Corbett and First Lady Susan Corbett serve as honorary co-chairs, is sponsored by the Gettysburg Foundation, Martel and Associates, and Cotter Brobson Communications.
The goal of the contest is to honor the importance of Lincoln's famed address, reinforce its relevance to present day and perpetuate the values it represents.
Since participation is aligned with Pennsylvania's Common Core academic standards, it can be incorporated into classrooms and used as a teaching tool by educators.
"In Lincoln's Footsteps" is open to all Pennsylvania public, parochial, private, charter or home school students who will be entering grades 10-12 in the 2013-14 school year.
The deadline to participate has been extended from Monday, April 1 to Monday, April 15.
"A good amount of interest has been expressed in the contest and we are committed to making sure that every student who wants to apply can participate," chair of the contest Dr. Myles Martel said. "This change was made in consultation with the Department of Education and in consideration of the lost school days throughout the commonwealth this winter."
