A homeless sex offender received two consecutive life sentences in prison with no possibility of parole Thursday for two Portland killings.
Mark Beebout pleaded guilty to aggravated murder back on Feb. 22. He killed 15-year-old Mayra Sophia Cruz Rodriguez, whose body was found in Washington Park, and 32-year-old Nikayla Powell, whose body was found in her Belmont Street apartment.
"Evil exists in our world, I know," Nick Otting, Powell's uncle, told Beebout during Thursday's hearing. "However, evil activities such as yours are not forgivable."
Beebout and Powell were living together when she was killed. The two met at Operation Nightwatch, an organization that serves as a sanctuary for the homeless who have nowhere else to go.
"She should be here meditating, riding her bike, eating the food she loved, doing yoga, listening to her music," said Shannon Blanchard, who once date Powell. "She was robbed and all of us with her."
Powell's body was found on July 10, 2012, and U.S. marshals arrested Beebout in Seattle a little more than a week later. He had Powell's car and dog with him at the time of his arrest.
