TUALATIN, OR (KPTV) -

Tualatin police have arrested a man who they say killed his 13-year-old Labrador retriever with a hatchet, then left the dog in a dumpster at his apartment complex.

The owner of the dog, Leroy Moffitt, who lived at Rivercrest Meadows Apartments in Tualatin, is facing aggravated animal abuse charges.

Police were able to track down Moffitt as the owner using the dog's microchip.

Police said he admitted to killing the dog earlier in the day, but police haven't released his motive.

Moffitt was booked in the Washington County Jail, then released at 12:30 a.m. Friday.

His arraignment is set for March 26 at 8:30 a.m.
