After seeing news reports about a fake order for 6,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, people arrived in droves Saturday to try and help make up the difference during a special sale.
Within four hours, approximately half of the loss was covered, with about 3,000 boxes of cookies being sold at their headquarters in southwest Portland.
Two weeks ago, troop mom Jennifer Reed and her scouts were thrilled when they got an order for 6,000 boxes of cookies.
"It was really exciting," said Reed.
Reed said she was approached by a woman who said her mother's company wanted 500 cases of cookies. At first, Reed said the $24,000 order seemed legitimate.
"Her mother's company was going to place a large order of Girl Scout cookies as sort of a public service to help out the two troops so they're able to meet their goals, attend summer camp and do lots of summer activities," said Reed.
Her 8-year-old daughter, Erin, planned to use the cookie credits from the big order on Girl Scout camp this summer.
But when the time came to pay, Reed said she got no response from the company, or the woman she had been talking to. It turns out the company never ordered the cookies in the first place.
"Apparently, it was a fraudulent order placed by her daughter who was assuming her mother's identity," said Reed.
Reed said she confronted the woman, who apologized, but gave no reason for placing the fake order.
The troops will be selling cookies again next Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Girl Scouts local offices at 9620 SW Barbur Blvd.
