Murder suspect sentenced to 18 years in prison

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The man found guilty of killing and robbing a man in the Pearl District will spend 18 years in prison.  A judge handed down that sentence to Charles Lake in court on Monday.

In the early morning hours of March 16, 2012, police were called to a disturbance at the Station Place Tower Apartments on Northwest 10th and Lovejoy.  That's where they found Charles Morton, 64, dead.

According to court documents, Lake stabbed Morton several times.  He also kicked and punched him.  The two had only met earlier that day, court documents said.  What led to the killing is still unclear.

"I'm sure Mort didn't do anything to you that morning, Mr. Lake, that deserved you staying in his apartment kicking and stabbing him until he was dead," Randall Walker, a friend of Morton's, said during Monday's sentencing hearing.  "I hope you think about that choice you made for the next 18 years."

Morton worked at the Port of Portland Police Department as a 911 dispatcher for 16 years before retiring.
