A plane rolled off the runway and nearly into a river with a student pilot and instructor inside.

It happened Monday afternoon at Twin Oaks Air Park in Hillsboro.

Police said the student pilot, 26-year-old Lars Ljungqvist was trying to take off in a two seater plane, when the instructor noticed one of the doors had come open.

Ljungqvist decided to keep the plane on the ground, but he was unable to stop in time. That's when he and the instructor slid off the runway, at about 4 p.m.

Washington County deputies responded and found the plane had gone over an embankment, causing the nose and engines to crash into the ground.

The damage to the plane rendered it a total loss due to the engine damage, severe fuselage damage and a severed wing.

Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident. The FAA responded and is continuing the investigation.
