An accident investigation team examines the scene on Wednesday afternoon.
SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -
TV5 can confirm two people were killed and three others injured in a fatal crash that temporarily closed Gratiot Road, or M-46, in Saginaw Township at Davis Drive.
The crash happened just before 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and the accident scene is just east of the Saginaw Country Club.
Gratiot reopened to traffic about three hours after the crash.
Police said a 45-year-old Saginaw man was driving a silver Chevrolet pickup truck west bound on Gratiot. This driver crossed the roadway into the east bound traffic lanes striking a tan Chevrolet Impala and a black Jeep Liberty, which were both eastbound on Gratiot.
The pickup truck came to rest on the road right of way on the south side of the road. That driver had non-life threatening injuries, however he was pinned in the vehicle for a short time. Once the fire department personnel extricated him from the vehicle, he was transported by ambulance to Covenant Hospital for treatment.
Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald Pussehl said three sisters from Bridgeport were traveling together in the Chevrolet Impala. Pussehl said two passengers in this vehicle sustained fatal injuries and passed away at the scene. The driver of the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Covenant Hospital by ambulance.
The two women who did not survive the crash are identified as Carol Lyle, 63, and Judith Kelly, 67. The injured driver is identified as 63-year-old Patricia Aldrich.
The driver of the Jeep Liberty is from Thomas Township and authorities identified her as 69-year-old Alice Lapan.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased," said Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald Pussehl. The chief said the crash remains under investigation.
