A Tempe mother said her daughter was beaten up so badly at her high school that she had a concussion. And now, Letice Hix has filed a complaint with the Tempe Union High School District.
"It made me want to cry," Hix said.
Hix said a classmate had been picking on her 15-year-old daughter, Iraysha Smith, for months at Tempe High School until March 1, when it literally came to blows.
"She jumped on my child," Hix said. "She jumped on her pretty bad, bad enough for me to have to take her to the emergency room."
She said the girl sat on Iraysha's arms as she hit her head with closed fists and that Iraysha suffered a concussion and was bruised and swollen.
"The girl told me that she was going to get me and she will wait until I'm alone and she will get me and that's what she did," Iraysha said.
Hix said she thinks the altercation could have been prevented because her daughter had told school administrators several times she was being bullied. And now, she said the girl who allegedly attacked Iraysha is back at school after a brief suspension.
"I'm really angry at that school," Hix said. "I'm angry because I really thought they would've handled it a different way."
Tempe police on Thursday told CBS 5 News the girl had been arrested and charged with assault.
While the district declined an on-camera interview, a representative said over the phone that officials just learned of the fight Tuesday. They claim the school did not know of problems between the two girls and that they took disciplinary action according to their policies. But since Hix filed a complaint with the district, they said they'll review the issue.
Iraysha, meanwhile, said the threats have continued, and she hopes this doesn't happen again.
"All I ask is that she stays away from me," Iraysha said.
