Church cancels Sunday services after burglary

A burglar was caught on camera stealing thousands of dollars worth of equipment from a Portland church.

The thief hit Central Christian Church on Southeast Cesar Chavez Boulevard around 7 a.m. Sunday - just hours before services were to begin.

"This is the first time in my ministry of almost 40 years that I've had to cancel church for this kind of thing," said Pastor David Brink.

Instead of a house of worship, the church was a crime scene as detectives tallied up the damage.

Several door knobs had been busted, speakers and amplifiers were pulled from their sockets, and the office safe had been cracked open with a hammer.

The burglar hit every floor of the three-story church, making off with about $6,000 in cash and equipment.

The thief also took student records that included contact information for church members.

Surveillance cameras were rolling when he rolled out of the church on a bike, just eight minutes before Brink arrived at the church.
