North Portland man arrested for guns, drugs and erratic behavior

It has been a challenging time for people living on a section of North Winchell Street in Portland.

In the past weeks, they say they noticed increasingly odd and erratic behavior from Mark Brandt, a man who had previously been nice and friendly.

They saw what appeared to be drug use and drug dealing from his home.

Fear increased when neighbors reported seeing Brandt open fire with one of his rifles, at one point even aiming the gun at them.

"It got to the situation where we had to start calling the police because things were getting more and more unsafe," neighbor Erin Fairchild said.

Last Thursday, police issued a search warrant for Brandt's home.

Inside, they say they found three rifles, a handgun, numerous rounds of ammunition, meth and drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested Brandt.

He has since been released pending trial.

Police believe he is suffering from a mental health crisis and may need treatment.

"When things started getting out of hand, the kind of things that come with drug addiction and other kinds of struggles, we were really worried, and we didn't want that happening because it feels unsafe, scary and stressful," Fairchild said.

"He's just an example of someone who in our community got involved with drugs and people who deal with that, and there are problems that come with that. So we're worried about him," neighbor Diane Gasperin said.

Brandt's preliminary hearing is set for next month.
