A fire at McGrath's Fish House in Milwaukie was caused by improperly discarded ashes placed too close to the building's combustible wood siding.
No one was inside the restaurant when the fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. A Milwaukie police officer patrolling the parking lot reported the fire at 11050 SE Oak St.
Crews attacked the flames on the outside of the building, checked the roof and then ventilated it.
There were no injuries reported.
Investigators said the fire caused $15,000 to $20,000 in damage. It's not known whether the restaurant will open for business as usual Tuesday.
Firefighters said the incident serves as a reminder to be careful when discarding ashes. The ashes should be placed in a non-combustible container of water to let them cool prior to placing them in the trash, officials said.
