HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

A sewage spill has closed a Hillsboro nature trail.

Hillsboro city leaders said the spill happened at the Rock Creek Landing Apartments, 3009 N.W. Overlook Drive, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

City work crews responded to the scene and had the sewage flow stopped by 1:18 p.m. Investigators determined the overflow was caused by a tree root hitting the line.

There is no estimate on the amount of sewage that spilled. However, raw sewage did flow across the Rock Creek Trail and into the creek's wetlands.

The trail has been closed between Evergreen Parkway and Cornell Road. Workers have placed barricades, signs and caution tape in the area.

Parents are advised to keep children from playing in the wetlands and waterway of Rock Creek south of Evergreen.

Pet owners should also keep their animals away from the area.

Public works crews are taking water samples to deliver to experts from Clean Water Services for analysis. It is not known how long the area will be off limits for public use.
