Detectives are investigating a possible hate crime after they say a man dressed in women's clothing was attacked outside a Portland movie theater.
Carlos Cervantes, 53, of Yacolt, WA, went in costume to a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Clinton Street Theatre last weekend.
Afterward, he said a man called him a gay slur and then attacked him. Portland bias crime detectives are now handling the case.
Having first seen the cult classic film in the 1970s, Cervantes said he fully embraces the traditions and costumes that go along with it. He was dressed in a bustier, tights and dancing shorts for the showing in southeast Portland.
He said the outfit was a hit for Rocky Horror fans, but outside the theater it was a different story.
"They looked at me and in that moment, they had so much hatred," he said of his attacker and another man.
Cervantes said he tried to walk away from the two men, but he didn't get far before one of them pushed him down in the street and began kicking him in the head.
Cervantes said he suffered a concussion and several bumps and bruises.
"Coming stealthfully out of the darkness and delivering his violent blows, I'm not the first one he's done this to and I can assure you, I won't be the last," he said.
Investigators believe the suspect is a black man in his 20s. He was last seen walking southbound on Southeast 27th Avenue. Police were called to the scene at 2:50 a.m. Sunday.
If you know anything about this case, call Portland police.
As for Cervantes, he said everyone was having a good time prior to the attack
"I did get a roar from the crowd when they got a look at me," he said. "So, I'm glad the crowd enjoyed it."
