Police continue search for killer after gas station shooting

Posted: Updated:

Portland police continue to look for a shooter who killed an 18-year-old man at a gas station in northeast Portland on Wednesday.

Police have identified the man killed as 18-year-old Edward Jewell Paden Jr. Detectives believe the killing was gang-related.

It happened at about 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Valero Gas Station, on the corner of Northeast 60th and Killingsworth.

Police said several shots were fired and witnesses reported some kind of disturbance at the gas station leading up to the shooting.

"I was doing yard work and stuff and all of a sudden I heard three gunshots," said Desiree Johnson, who lives nearby. "I was nervous, I just went back inside the house."

Detectives haven't elaborated on what led up to the violence.

The shooter has not been caught, and there is no suspect information at this time.

Paden lived a few blocks away, and his family arrived at the scene looking for answers within an hour of the shooting.

"This is a tragic time for our family," said Latonia Pleasant, the victim's aunt. "It's a great loss. he was a great kid. Very loving and kind."

Family and friends left flowers and messages next to the gas pumps where Paden's body was found.

Detectives have interviewed several people at the scene, but they believe there may be more witnesses that left the area before talking to police.

If you know anything about the case, call police at 503-823-3333.

The shooting was the third homicide of the year and the 13th gang-related shooting of the year. In 2012, there were 27 homicides and 118 gang shootings in Portland.
